SMiles Lewis has had a lifelong interest in all things anomalous. An early age proclivity at recalling his nightly dreams as well as several personal experiences with ESP, precognition and dream switching bolstered his interest in the paranormal. Shortly after high-school he joined the local MUFON chapter in Austin, Texas. He would later become a MUFON State Section Director for that group as well as leader of the local UFO Experiencer Support and Study Group. A lover of books, SMiles collected over 1000 titles before founding the non-profit Anomaly Archives that serves as the lending library of the Scientific Anomaly Institute (501c3). For over twenty years he has worked with digital audio, video and other bleeding edge internet technologies. He has published his own print journal (E.L.F. Infested Spaces), edited a local paranormal newspaper (Austin Para Times), maintained a large network of websites (ELFIS.net), organized a national UFO conference (NUFOC-38), spoken to anthropologists about UFOs and parapsychology (Encounters with the Fantastic), hosted (and been a guest on) both terrestrial and webradio talk shows and has been podcasting since before the phrase existed. All these efforts and more have led radio talk show host Robert Larson to describe Miles as a “Gonzo Alt-Media Proprietor and Informationalist.” He is also the LOWFI-Texas State Bureau Chief of The League of Western Fortean Intermediatists.

SMiles’ current projects include co-hosting PsiOp-Radio with Mack White as part of the many unique shows airing daily on his ANOMALY RADIO Network.

He is active with several local non-profits which includes his service on the board of directors for the Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Scientific Anomaly Institute‘s lending library, the Anomaly Archives.

His writings can be found within the Archives of his print journal ELFIS and ANOMALY Magazine.

In his day job with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission‘s Talking Book Program he manages a Volunteer Recording Studio and audio duplication department and has been a consultant on two digital audio development documents for the Library of Congress‘ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Our Dreaming Mind

by Robert Van De Castle

Van de Castle, former director of the Sleep and Dream Laboratory at the University of Virginia, presents the scientific facts surrounding dreams as well as some of the more prophetic, paranormal associations. He begins his well-organized text with a history of dreams, using such anecdotes as the revelation in a dream of the location of Kuwait’s great oil reserves to a British political official. Van de Castle proceeds to describe modern dream theories of the 20th century with a particular emphasis on Freud and Jung. He continues with the current state of dream research and ends with the paranormal qualities of dreams. While books concerning dreams abound, this broad and intelligent work is highly recommended.

–Jennifer Amador, Central State Hosp. Medical Lib., Petersburg, Va.

Inspirational imagery revealed in dreams to Muhammad, Gandhi, Descartes, Wagner, Handel, Coleridge, Yeats, Orson Welles, Elias Howe and many others has wrought significant changes in politics, science, art, music, film, literature and religion. Yet dreams have been devalued in Western culture, and one reason for this, suggests Van de Castle, is that Freud’s forging of strong links among dreams, neuroses and sex has thwarted a wider exploration of the full meaning of dreams. Former director of the University of Virginia Medical School’s Sleep and Dream Laboratory, the author explores the dream theories of Freud, Jung, Montague Ullman, Fritz Perls and others. He surveys the importance of dream imagery in ancient and non-Western cultures and crams in a wealth of information on children’s dreams, recurrent dreams, nightmares, gender differences in dreaming and much else. This immensely readable resource is a monumental history of dreams and a practical stimulus for those who want to remember and work with their dreams. Illustrated.

by Paul H. Smith, Ph.D. / Review by Alex Roslin

When word got out in 1995 that the U.S. Defense Department and CIA had funded efforts to read people’s minds, the news understandably excited all sorts of derision and conspiracy theories. Who would imagine that the story behind the efforts is actually a fascinating tale about the possibilities of human potential? Paul H. Smith tells the story of the U.S. “psychic spying” program in his book Reading the Enemy’s Mind. Smith doesn’t come across as some flaky new-ager. He was a young U.S. Army intelligence officer and Arab linguist who had no previous interest in extra-sensory perception when he was recruited into the program code-named “Star Gate” in 1983. Over the next seven years, he became one of the army’s premier “remote viewers” and the primary author of its training manual on the subject. He also served as a tactical intelligence officer in the 101st Airborne Division in Operation Desert Storm/Shield and got a Master’s degree from the Defense Intelligence College.

In Reading the Enemy’s Mind, Smith reveals that the military and intelligence communities performed hundreds of experiments and operational intelligence assignments using “remote viewing,” the government’s term for ESP. The program’s first big success came in 1979 when a viewer found a downed Soviet bomber in Africa after other intelligence operatives had failed–a coup praised by President Jimmy Carter. The psychics received target assignments from virtually every U.S. national-security agency, and Smith says they produced numerous positive results. Smith’s biggest revelation, however, is that the government research found that almost all people–not merely a gifted few–seem to have the potential of developing ESP skills, with enough practice and a few tips from a pro like Smith. Many readers will no doubt find it hard to know what to make of Reading the Enemy’s Mind and whether to believe any of it, but Smith writes with both color and a measured tone that together produce a captivating yarn even for the non-believers out there. –Alex Roslin –

In the 1970s, physicist Harold (Hal) Puthoff, engineer Russell Targ, and psychic Ingo Swann were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to do research on psychic abilities with the general intention of verifying the phenomenon and adapting some methods of eliciting it to military purposes. After several years of research at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), a process termed Remote Viewing was developed and eventually adopted by the United States Army Intelligence service. Based in Fort Meade, Maryland, military remote viewers carried out a program of intelligence gathering which proved quite successful in obtaining information about activities and personnel in known, remote, often inaccessible, locations. An active program was carried on by Army Intelligence for over 20 years.

One aspect of the program proved problematical, however: while information was readily available from known locations, it proved exceedingly difficult to obtain the location of a person or persons known, but at an unknown location. Likewise, it was almost impossible to remote view numbers. A complementary method was eventually developed by the scientists at SRI which allowed the intelligence officers to obtain information revealing the required locations and/or numbers. This method was termed by the military “Remote Dowsing”.

I just sent you an answer telepathically. For those of you who need to communicate in a more traditional manner, the answer is yes. Austin is home to the Institute for Neuroscience and Consciousness Studies, a nonprofit organization whose membership includes doctors in the field of psychology. Stephen Miles Lewis, vice president of the group, defines parapsychology as the science of anomalous cognition, or nontraditional means of thinking and awareness. The group’s mission is to “expand the scientific understanding of human consciousness and to develop practical applications of this understanding for public benefit, by conducting scientific research in psi (psychic abilities) and related phenomena and by offering educational opportunities to the public.”Research topics include lucid dreams and other altered states of consciousness. The group meets periodically (its most recent meeting took place at BookPeople and featured the author of a book on hypnosis). For more information, visit www.inacs.org. Lewis is also involved in the Anomaly Archive, www.anomalyarchives.org, which maintains a library of books related to parapsychology for its members.

Our perspective of reality involves concepts such as cause-and-effect, force, and a persistent, stable reality. This worldview, learned early in life, is reinforced by Western education and society, and is taken for granted by most adults. Occasionally there are challenges to this worldview. One example is the development of quantum mechanics, which has dissolved most of the basic assumptions underlying common sense reality. Another is psychic phenomena, commonly reported but scientifically controversial. In this evening lecture, Dean Radin, a senior scientist with IONS, will present the possibility that psychic phenomena are the human experiences of quantum reality, as discussed in his new book, Entangled Minds.

the fundamental differences between classical and quantum realities

the latest scientific evidence for psychic phenomena

why these effects are important

Co-Sponsored with The Institute for Neuroscience and Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Institute of Noetic Science (IONS) Dean Radin, Ph.D.Nearly everyone has had the experience of knowing who[base ']s on the line before picking up the phone or dreaming events before they happen. Many scientists believe that such common experiences are due solely to coincidence, wishful thinking, and other delusions. That belief is driven strongly by the lack of a plausible theory for how such “psychic” experiences can exist, and not by the actual scientific evidence. This one-day workshop explores this evidence that some psychic phenomena do exist, and the possibility that a rational explanation for psychic phenomena may be on the horizon.
